A+E is looking to recruit a Research Manager to join its International Research team.  The role will be an even mix of programming and commercial research though the candidate needs to have previous experience of working in the field of ad sales and other commercial research so that they can independently attend to requests that come in from the Ad Sales, Affiliates and Content Sales departments.  The role also involves working on projects with the Marketing and Programming departments.

POSITION SUMMARY:  Principle purpose / function of this position.

  • Support the global and pan-regional ad sales business with consumer research and insight to inform decision-making and future growth of the A+E portfolio of channels.
  • Provide strong sales arguments and recommendation in support of the day-to-day needs of the ad sales team.
  • Provide research & insight for affiliate negotiations to key stakeholders.
  • Develop sales materials utilizing secondary research sources (e.g. IHS Screen Digest, Ovum, ZenithOptimedia) and online data systems (Ipsos Affluent Survey/Choices, ComScore/Nielsen, GfK/Ericcson, TechEdge, ITVR, TGI).
  • Work in partnership with other members of the International Research & Insight team to implement and manage ad hoc qualitative and quantitative projects.


Major Activities with % of Time

  1. Track and report ad sales performance/impacts across A+E local channels to drive revenue. Create impact reports, forecast and conversions from ratings goals. 25%
  2. Use Ipsos Affluent Survey data and Choices software to develop pitches for commercial development. 25%
  3. Generate consumer/industry insights utilizing syndicated research data. 15%
  4. Conduct pre and post campaign evaluations to support future commitment from advertisers. 15%
  5. Support Content Sales business by providing UK telecast trackers from TechEdge/AdvantEdge software. Work with TRP Repeat Coding Service to sync with AdvantEdge. 10%
  6. Maintain quarterly global brand dashboards across 6 channels in Tableau. 5%
  7. Supply weekly ratings for report automation dashboards. 5%

  • The position requires a high level of autonomy and initiative to provide the expected outcome for International.
  • Position will be expected to manage autonomously his/her tasks and responsibility and make key decisions on a day to day basis in consultation with VP Int'l Research, Snr Director Int'l Research and Director Int'l Research. Support Content Sales and Commercial Development key executives.



Position will have one research analyst direct report and collaborates with a network of researchers and resources across A+E Networks International partners around the world.


Dollars Measures: ad or affiliate revenues, purchases, programming expenditures, equipment & systems investments, accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree minimum
  • Specialized or technical knowledge & skills: Strong analytical skills, Strong Communicator
  • Kind and length of experience: 5 years' experience in media research or national agency/media company required
  • Required Managerial or Interpersonal Skills: Team player, Self-starter, can do attitude


  • Entrepreneurial attitude - develop ideas and suggestions to leverage research to grow business
  • Strong Communicator & relationship builder
  • Confident self-starter who is comfortable working autonomously
  • Competency to both set their own objectives and manage their own time
  • Able to manage multiple projects and prioritize to meet tight deadlines

Technical Skills:

  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent numeric skills and a high level of comfort manipulating detailed and complex quantitative data
  • Advanced MS Excel (including macros and charting tools)
  • Advanced MS PowerPoint
  • Experience working a range of international ratings software packages
  • Ability to use cross-tab and other statistical packages like SNAP, SPSS etc.
  • European language a big advantage
  • Professional market research qualifications would be a bonus


  • Genuine interest in the TV business
  • Awareness of the trends and changes affecting our industry (VOD, SVOD, etc.)
  • Good understanding of the basics of airtime (advertising) sales
  • Good understanding of the basics of programme scheduling
  • Good understanding of the role played by audience measurement in the above
  • Good understanding of principles of marketing and market research

Amount of time required to reach expected level of competence: 3 months
